Fairs and Festivals

West Bengal -- a land of festivals, a land of spirit and enthusiasm. There is a popular saying in Bengali ‘‘Baro Mase Tero Parban’, which literally means thirteen festivals in twelve months. Almost all festivals of all religions are celebrated here with equal sentiment and fervor. These festivals are the ways to showcase the tradition and rich culture of the people. A great number of fairs are also organized.

The most popular festival celebrated in West Bengal is Durga Puja. All the people come out in the streets and celebrate this almost weeklong festival. Other festivals celebrated in West Bengal are Kaali Puja, Basant Panchami, Dusshera, Bhai Phonta/Dooj, Holi, Mahavir Jayanti, Buddha Jayanti, Rath Yatra, Eid  and Christmas. Other events which have almost taken the form of festivals are Rabindra Jayanti (birthday of Rabindranath Tagore), Birthday of Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa and Birthday of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose.

While some festivals, events and fairs have a very local significance, there are some which are celebrated universally across the state.  These festivals are described in detail here.

Festivals - Kolkata

Kolkata Book Fair

All book lovers of Kolkata or West Bengal eagerly wait for this attractive festival in Kolkata, Kolkata Book Fair. This is a unique fair where Books are primarily for the general public rather than whole-sale distributors. It is the world's largest non-trade book fair, Asia's largest book fair and the most attended book fair in the world. It is the world's third largest annual conglomeration of books after the Frankfurt Book Fair and the London Book Fair.

Many Kolkatans consider the book fair an integral part of Kolkata. The fair also has a typical fairground experience with the smell of new books - with the presence of picnickers, singer-songwriters, and candy floss vendors on the fair premises. With a total footfall of over 2 million people, it is world's largest book fair by attendance.

Every year, the book fair committee decides a theme for the fair. Eminent personalities are invited and a special pavilion for the theme country is made. E.g Mexico has been selected the focal theme country for the 2010 Book Fair. Scotland was selected the focal theme country for the 2009 Book Fair, USA was the theme country for 2008.

Virtually all major European scientific publishers or corresponding franchisees set up a shop. This includes Oxford University Press, Cambridge University Press, Kluwer and Springer Verlag.

The fair also has diplomatic mission stalls, which typically display and sell books of their country. The British Council, United States Information Service, and Alliance française typically host stalls. The European Union, Bangladesh and several Latin American embassies have hosted stalls in the recent years.

The fair traditionally starts on the last Wednesday of January and ends on the first or second Sunday of February (to ensure that the duration is always 12 days). It was initially a week-long event but popular demand forced authorities to extend the duration to 12 days in 2005.

Kolkata Film Festival

Kolkata Film Festival (KFF) is the 2nd oldest international film festival in India, held in Kolkata. The festival is organized by West Bengal Film Centre under the West Bengal Government.

Nandan not only provided the technical infrastructure for the film movement, but bestowed fruits to the Bengal intelligentsia for cerebral cultivation. From the moment of its foundation, the Kolkata film buffs demanded their own film festival that Bengal thoroughly deserved.

In 1995, Nandan organized its first ever independent film festival. Within a couple of years it was recognized by FIAPF (International Federation of Film Producers' Associations – Paris), the international authority of film festival & sometimes called the most intellectual film festival in Asia. For years Nandan has marched forward in building a proper film culture, travelling parallel to the so-called mainstream. Now, the Kolkata Film Festival is in its 15th year and shares a permanent place in the international film festival calendar, showcasing films from all over the world.
