Dining

West Bengal leaves all its visitors with an indelible taste of the gastronomic melting pot that it is.  A very popular saying in Bengali, the local language of West Bengal happens to be ‘machhe bhate bangali’ literally translated meaning ‘fish and rice make a Bengali’.  This more than anything else characterizes a culture and society which is often stereotyped by the food consumed.  Bengal’s vast repertoire of fish based dishes includes Hilsa preparations, a favourite among Bengalis.  There are many vegetables that are cooked into delicacies such as egg plants, green jackfruit, banana tree stems and flower and gourds.  Bengali’s are mostly non-vegetarians and consume a variety of meat apart from fish, which are cooked up in traditional Bengali styles.  The spices used are the distinguishing factor between the dishes.

Apart from restaurants specializing in Bengali food, the cosmopolitan nature of the state and specially the major urban cities like Kolkata is epitomized by the variety of cuisines and dining options available covering all parts of India with North Indian and South Indian food being the most popular.  Going beyond the borders, Chinese, Thai, Italian and Continental food remain all time favourites with several specialized and high-end dining options available, not to mention the global giants – McDonalds, KFC, Subway and Pizza Hut.
Street food of West Bengal, especially Kolkata is yet another major attraction. The popular ones include Aloor chop, Beguni, Kati Roll, and Phuchka.  Bengalis are famous for making distinctive sweets from milk products like Roshogolla, Chomchom and a wide variety of Sandesh. Other popular sweet dishes include Payesh, Moa, Naru, Pithe and Patishapta.
